A write up of my MathsConf38 session on the use of ratio tables to support the development the conceptual understanding of algebraic drect and inverse proportion relationships. A little late, after starting a new job the same week and a busy summer... but finally written!

The End of an Era
As I write this, I have 5 school days left as a teacher. There are equal parts of me that are devastated and relieved about this.
Year 11 Exam Prep: The Staple Challenge
I've been tweeting about "The Staple Challenge" for a few months now, and the rationale behind it is really quite hard to fit into short tweets. So I thought a blog was in order!
Teach Meet ECT Icons – “A Lesson” is the Wrong Unit for Learning
Today saw me present a 20 minute session on curriculum and planning for TeachMeet ECT Icons. I really loved trying to distill my ideas about how planning should work ACROSS a curriculum and ACROSS time, rather than within an one hour block. My slides are below. Please do get in touch if you want to … Continue reading Teach Meet ECT Icons – “A Lesson” is the Wrong Unit for Learning
A Beginners Guide to Being Second in Department
Once again I have left a huge gap between my last post and this one... this time my excuse is my new job at a new school. At Easter I took on a new position as Deputy Faculty Leader in Maths. It has been a huge change, and a huge learning curve. I got lost … Continue reading A Beginners Guide to Being Second in Department
RQT Resolutions
It's that time of year again - back to school! I think teachers are very lucky, in many ways - today I'm specifically feeling lucky for the sense of 'New Year' that we get to have in the middle of an 'Old Year'. There' something about September, with a promise of a new timetable, new classes, new stationery, maybe even a new school... all these things are a new challenge. It gives us time to reflect on what we've done in the previous school year and how we'd like to make things better for ourselves and our students in the coming one.
Holidays and Working

It's no secret that these columns irk me... infact since the 'Pupils are forcefed maths they'll never use' debacle I have tried to avoid it entirely and combatted it with tweets and blog posts with #loveteaching. There are … Continue reading Holidays and Working
Life as an NQT
Last week I was lucky enough to be asked to head back into University to deliver the 'Life as an NQT' lecture. When my old mentor got in touch to ask me to do it, I was really humbled - her thinking of me for something like that is a great compliment. Last year we … Continue reading Life as an NQT
My ‘Why’
It's been a while since I've sat and written anything here, because I have been very busy just being a teacher. I'm not yet at that "Teacher and also a real life person" stage yet, I don't think. I'm getting there - I leave school at 5 whenever I can, and I try to have at … Continue reading My ‘Why’
Why I #loveteaching
I may be relatively new to this teaching lark, but I have to admit that the negativity surrounding the profession at the moment can get me down. No more so than when reading the Guardian's Secret Teacher article from 2 weeks ago. Written by a maths teacher, the article berated the maths curriculum and suggested … Continue reading Why I #loveteaching
